U15's v Felinfoel - Try fest but unconvincing win

We took on Felinfoel for the first time in about 5 years on a mild and sunny late November morning...ideal for rugby!  The game started brightly with both teams getting to grips with each other.  It was the visitors who scored first whe the ball came to one of their second row's who broke through three or four weak takles near the halfway line to burst through and despite a last ditch tackle by fullback Steff Richards near the line his momentum too him over for the score.  The conversion was missed, 0-5.  This seemed to wake the boys up and we started pressurising well.  On 10 mins a loose kick out of defense was picked up by scrum half Brandon Jones who ran back 30 yds brushing off a few defenders to score.  Brandon missed the convesion, 5-5.  We started to put some moves together and on 16 mins a neat backs move saw the ball reach speedy winger Alastair Morgan who cut back off his wing and ran in under the posts for a well worked try.  The conversion was good, 12-5.  A few minutes later, Felinfoel were on the attack just inside the halfway line and a floated pass towards their winger was intercepted by Ieuan Sleeman who was tackled just short by Felinfoel's speedster fullback.  Brandon was able to pick up from the ruck and dive over for a simple try, but missed the resulting conversion, 17-5 after 19 mins.  Felinfoel contiued to try and play the running game and with strong running from their No. 8 and their elusive, flying fullback they were causing us problems.  However it was Gowerton who got the final score of the half when a nice break by No. 10 Sam Cartwright saw him beat a few tackles before passing the ball out to centre Joe Richards to score in the corner.  Brandon converted from far out to make it 24-5 at half time.

The second half started like the first with Felinfoel quickest out of the blocks.  A loose kick from Gowerton was pounced on by their fullback who nearly ran all the way without a finger being laid on him but was eventually stopped just short, however Gowerton were penalised and Felinfoel caught the boys napping with a quick tap to score under the posts.  A simple conversion made it 24-12 after hust a minute of the second half.  A few minutes later Gowerton were deep in Felinfoel's 22 and the ball went out to winger Theo Evans who thought he was over only to be tackled just short, however No. 8 Cameron Jones was on hand to pick up and dive over for the score, Brandon converted, 31-12.  Felinfoel never threw in the towel and kept trying and were rewarded with a well worked try in the corner.  Conversion missed 31-17 after 8 minutes.  The game was now getting more open and on 12 minutes a quick penalty in Felinfoel's 22 saw Joe Richards crash over for his second of the game, Brandon once again converted, 38-17.  A few minutes later we were on the attack again only for Felinfoel's No. 8 this time to intercept a pass and run half the length of the pitch, he was ankle tapped about 5 meters out but was able to get up and stretch over for a well deserved score.  With the conversion successful we now led 38-24 with 15 minutes to go.  It was now end to end stuff and a lot of missed tackles from both sides.  2 minutes later, we scored once again with Brandon getting his third try and also the conversion, 45-24.  Felinfoel were now back on the attack and a loose pass near the halfway line was kicked on by flanker Teigue Williams and with a favourable bounce, the ball landed perfectly for Teigue to gather and run in unopposed for a well deserved solo effort, Brandon converted once more , 52-24 with 11 minyes still to play.  A couple of minutes later the dangerous Felinfoel fullback gathered the ball and jinked his way through a tired looking defense to score another try, the conversion was missed, 52-29.  Straight from the kick off Felinfoel were pressing once more and their No. 8 baarged through to score once more, the conversion was again mised, 52-34.  In the dying seconds of the game, Felinfoel threw everything into their final effort of the game and were rewarded with their 7th try of the game and 6th of the second half.  The conversion was unsuccessful and the final whistle went.  Gowerton winning 52-39 but only outscoring them by 8 tries to 7, thankfully the missed conversions made the scoreline more convincing than what it actually was.  Overall an entertaining game to watch for those there but no doubt the coaches will not be happy with the number of tries conceded in the second half.  Full credit going to Felinfoel for their part in the game too.
