Gowerton left with too much to do

It was a stunning setting for another excellent game of rugby. Gowerton continue to play some expansive, enjoyable rugby which is perhaps a better measure of their progress than just results. Close games all.

In an even start, it was the improving Josh P who made an early foray into the Tonmawr half, whilst Josh B was making his presence felt with some fierce tackling to hold up the hosts. However, Tonmawr were first on the board as they retrieved the ball from a ruck and outflanked the visitors to go over. Gowerton responded directly from the kick off through good work in the forwards before Elliot H stretched over for his first score in 5 years.

The forwards were competing well in the rucks with Luc J prominent, and showing enterprise and tenacity in midfield with Jac S and Charlie S combining well with Josh B and Kobe B, before Tonmawr went over again from close range. Showing great character, Gowerton again responded immediately with a good win at the ruck, from which Josh P again made progress before releasing the backs. It was Josh B who brilliantly held the covering defender before releasing Jake T to power over in the corner. A great team try.

The teams swapped scores again before the half, with the Josh B/Jake T combination working well to go over once more. 17-17.

Tonmawr dominated possession in the early part of the second half, with only Ethan H able to make any forward impression. The intensity was dropping off as Tonmawr began to dominate the rucks and they went over from close range followed by a further score after Gowerton gave up possession in midfield. Jac S and Charlie S were working hard to get the backs going, but found themselves under increasing pressure with the help of some creative refereeing, before another score after a blocked return put the boys even further behind. They finished well though, a prolongued forward effort through several set pieces eventually saw Ethan H go over before the end.

Despite the result, the boys continue to develop as a team with everyone contributing. Zac J is throwing well at the lineout, James R has found a niche for himself at prop and the Elliot H/Josh P combination continues to develop. It was great to have Joe D back who will add competition for places and with Iuean E improving all the time and Jack G showing increasing enthusiasm, there is real potential there. Despite the absence of Charlie W, the backs performed well, in defence as well as going forward with Jake T a constant threat given the space and early ball. We also welcomed Josh H who showed tremendous pace out wide, and he will surely add to the competition for places out wide. With Alex J a solid fixture at full back, there is every reason to expect results to go our way in the coming weeks. 36-24.
