U15's v Morriston - Squad depletion takes it toll

Travelling to Morriston with just 18 fit players was always going to be a tough ask and so it turned out.  It meant a number of backs playing out of position but it would be a good test of character for those playing.  Morriston started the stronger and their big pack took control in both scrums and mauls.  Morriston took the lead after 4 mins from a ruck close to our line and crashed over for the opening score which went unconverted 5-0.  Straight from the kick off, Morriston gathered the kick and looked to pass the ball along the line, scrum half turned centre Brandon Jones gambled and intercepted the long pass to run unopposed under the posts and an easy conversion followed, 5-7.  The boys were in the game and performing well.  However on 12 mins an indiscretion in our 22 saw Morriston take a quick penalty and their captain and centre cruised over near the posts for an easy try which was converted. 12-7.  On the stroke of halftime a loose kick was gathered by the Morrrisotn backs and the ball eventually found their burly left winger who had 40 yards to go and several defenders to beat but sadly for us he brushed through 2 or 3 weak ackles with ease and was eventually bravely brought down on the line by fullback Steff Richards but his momentum took him over for a fantastic solo effort.  The conversion was missed and the halftime whistle blew with Morriston leading 17-7.  Sadly we had now lost Steff and Alastair Morgan to injuries and were down to just one 16 players for the whole of the second half.

We started the second half with the slight advantages of the slope and a light wind and the opening exchanges by both teams were evenly matched.  We grew into the game and confidence was high.  Our forwards started to get more into the game and we had our fair share of possession and territory.  On 15 mins a fantastic move between forwards and backs which lasted several phases saw outside half Louis Davies dive over in the corner for a well worked try, sadly the difficult conversion from the touchline was missed, 17-12 and the game was anyones.  Morriston managed to find some extra strength from deep within and started to have more and more possession and dominate the latter part of the game.  On 22 mins they moved the ball wide only to be thwarted by some gallant defending on our line.  However from the resulting scrum and break, they crashed over in the corner for a deserved try.  Again the kick was missed and they led 22-12.  We continued to try and get back into the game but Morriston's defence held strong.  A loose kick down field was picked up by their speedy winger who put the afterburners on to burst through several defenders and was brought down twice only to get up as the referee said he wasn't held in the tackle.  Eventually he was brought down for a third time deep in our 22 and the supporting players were there in force and our defence finally crumbled and they crossed for an eay try under the posts.  The conversion was good and the referee blew for the end of the game, Morriston running out 29-12 winners.

The score slightly flattered the opposition on the day and could have been a lot different had we had our full complement of players available.  The boys can take heart out of the performance and never gave in against a very strong Morriston team.  Hopefully over the next week or so we'll see the majoirty of the injured players back on the pitch and the team back to full strength.
